1901 census...Aged 2, he was at West Street, Isleham with his father John HALL [45] a hay/straw dealer & farmer; his mother Elizabeth [35]; brother Ernest [10], sister Hilda, [6] brothers Charlie [4] and Bertie [ 3 months]. All were born in Isleham. 1911 census...Aged 12, he was at West Street, Isleham with his parents, brothers Ernest, Charles and Bertie, and sisters Ada [8] and Doris [4], both born in Isleham. One sibling had died. |

Enlisted in Cambridge. Without his army records it is impossible to find how he died, of illness or wounds, nor where he may have been wounded. Rouen was a main assembly point for the Army, and home of 15 hospitals and the cemeteries at St Sever hold the graves of over 8,000 WW1 dead. At one time there were 5 General Hospitals,and 5 Stationary Hospitals there. Another was for German prisoners of war and British prisoners with self-inflicted wounds. Also one for dealing with venereal disease (Army slang in those days was "A case for Rouen"). An official brothel which received over 170,000 men in its first year was closed due to adverse public opinion in UK. Rouen ranked with Etaples and Boulogne amongst the main hospital bases for the BEF. |
